We took surface roads from Arizona, through New Mexico, stopped in Durango Colorado for the night, then continued on to Ouray where we made our base camp.

Some scenery as we pass through New Mexico:

Here's Shiprock in New Mexico. Does it look like a Clipper Ship to you?

A little way into Colorado we pass Chimney Rock:

On the GPS in the Jeep it looked like there was at most 5 miles to Four Corners, so we took a detour and drove 18 miles to Four Corners and found that it was "Closed Due To Construction":

Our first view of some mountains we'll be traveling to in Colorado:

After sleeping over night in Durango, we met at our favorite mall for a shot of our Jeeps:

We also visited downtown Durango and took some pictures:

More tailings and mining sites along the way:

This site doesn't appear to be abandoned yet:

Lots of tailings on the far mountain:

Sideways "S" turns up here:

More mining:

An interesting roof over the road to allow the water/ice/snow to run over the road instead of on top of it:

A more conventional tunnel:

More scenery along the way. Have you noticed that the roads out here don't have a lot of guard rails or shoulders?:
